Chester hails “bizarre” moment that got his side over the line against Hull KR

Wakefield finally registered their first win of the season in a 28-12 victory over Hull KR, but head coach Chris Chester felt it had been coming for weeks.

They arguably produced their finest performance of the season, saving it for the return of their home fans, who were in fine voice throughout the game.

Reflecting more on the win, Chester said, “It was a really good win. I think it has been coming for the past couple of weeks.

“I thought these lads have been giving everything they have got. I have always said when we get our best players out on the field that we can beat anybody on the day.

“I am really pleased that we have managed to do in front of the fans, I am really pleased for the players and everyone involved.”

Australian half-back Jacob Miller returned to the side and produced a man-of-the-match performance.

Reflecting on Miller’s contribution, Chester added, “Jacob Miller is our captain, leader and I thought he did some good things today.

“I thought he was instrumental in the tries and going into this game, we had a lot of busted guys out there.

“David Fifita fractured a rib against Leeds, Mason Lino could not even walk on Wednesday with his back and it was touch and go whether he was going to play today.

“Both guys did themselves proud and we need all of our best players out on the pitch and we are not far off that now.”

The match will be remembered for including a rather bizarre incident as prop Tinirau Arona scored a 50 metre try, intercepting a wayward pass from Hull KR centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall.

Offering his thoughts on the incident as well as how his pack performed, Chester said “It was bizarre! I do not know whether he shouted for the ball but I have never seen anything like that.

“I thought he was going to get caught but it kind of put the game to bed. I thought he along with the starting pack were physical throughout the game.

“I thought Kelepi Tanginoa and Joe Westerman were fantastic, Jay Pitts had his best game for the club today too.”
