Super League Disciplinary: Five stars charged by match review panel

Super League Disciplinary has been a major talking point throughout this season largely due to the new rules which were put in place at the start of the year.

These created a massive crack down on head contact which led to a huge number of cards in the first round as best exemplified in the opening fixture of the season which had four cards shown in it sparked by some head contact early in the piece.

In Round Two, the controversy around Super League Disciplinary continued with the controversial red card shown to Fa’amanu Brown.

The RFL would later make a statement as they confirmed the Super League Disciplinary charges for that round that the decision to send Brown off was incorrect and was due in part to the way the news were described.

Following this, the RFL confirmed some minor rule changes and Super League Disciplinary has become far less divisive.

That being said, there were still a number of talking points arising from the Challenge Cup.

There were yellow cards shown to Alex Mellor of Castleford Tigers and Ligi Sao of Hull FC for late hits.

Hull FC have been hit the hardest by Super League disciplinary but these two weren’t the only players sin binned with concerns over Leeds Rhinos star Tom Holroyd and St Helens hooker Daryl Clark after an altercation on Friday.

So the question today was: would any of these pick up bans in light of the Challenge Cup Round Six and ahead of the a huge round of fixtures over Easter.

Following Round Six of the Betfred Challenge Cup, the Match Review Panel have issued the following sanctions:

James Bell (St Helens) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – 1 Match Penalty Notice (Higher end of the grade)
Paul McShane (Castleford Tigers) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – £250 Fine
Alex Mellor (Castleford Tigers) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – £250 Fine
Brad Day (Featherstone Rovers) – Grade C Head Contact – 1 Match Penalty Notice
MacKenzie Yei (Featherstone Rovers) – Grade E Dangerous Lift/Throw – Refer to Tribunal
Gadwin Springer (Featherstone Rovers) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – £125 Fine
Ben Kavanagh (Halifax Panthers) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – £125 Fine
Adam Keighran (Wigan Warriors) – Grade B Head Contact – £240 Fine
Izaac Farrell (Sheffield Eagles) – Grade C Dangerous Throw/Lift – 1 Match Penalty Notice
Cade Cust (Salford Red Devils) – Grade B Dangerous Contact – £250 Fine

Only five of these 10 charges have been given to Super League players with only one Super League player banned in the shape of James Bell.
