‘You can’t say that’ – How Lindsey Burrow reacted to Rob’s iconic ‘Over and out’ message

Lindsey and Rob Burrow

It’s been almost three weeks since the sad news broke regarding the passing of Rob Burrow and his life will be celebrated tonight at Headingley as Leeds Rhinos play their first home game since that news. Speaking ahead of the game, his wife Lindsey has revealed how she reacted to Rob’s now-iconic sign-off.

By now, it’s a sign-0ff message that’s ingrained in the hearts and minds of those who have heard it with the BBC documentary ‘There’s Only One Rob Burrow’ showcasing the Leeds legend’s final words.

“In a world full of adversity, we must still dare to dream.

“Rob Burrow, over and out.”

It’s a message that touched the hearts of those who read it and packs plenty of inspiration, before highlighting just what a character Rob Burrow was with his ‘over and out’ sign-off.

It was a message that made fans laugh and cry and now Rob’s wife Lindsey has revealed how she reacted to it when Rob first recorded it leading up to his death.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, who have done an incredible job supporting and documenting Rob Burrow and his family during his fight against MND, Lindsey explained: “When I first saw the message, my initial thought was Rob, you can’t say that, but that was just Rob.

“He was positive, he was humorous, he was funny, and that was his just way of leaving a stamp on the world, and I think that was just Rob in a nutshell.

“After initially thinking that it wasn’t right to put out, I respected his wishes and that’s the way he wanted to go out and Rob knew that that was going to be played after he was no longer with us. It’s just part of Rob and his humour and the banter. It was just Rob.

“I think the message teaches us all to live in the moment and to be brave whatever your personal battle. He lived by every word of facing your battle and not giving in. He’s taught us all a huge lesson in life.

She also opened up on the time since Rob’s passing and how she has coped herself, speaking with great pride on the life that he lived and the impact he has had. That’s set to be seen tonight at Headingley with a 15-year-high crowd expected to celebrate the life of Rob Burrow.

Lindsey said: “I couldn’t put into words just how proud I am of Rob. I think he was just such an inspiration to so many people. He was the face of the MND community and gave so many people hope. I think the legacy that he leaves is just incredible.

“Despite the grief and despite the sadness, we have so much to be thankful for, for having Rob in our lives. He made the world a better place to be.

“At the end, the fight was over and I take comfort from knowing that he’s not having to fight anymore and he put up the biggest, bravest fight. He was brave on the rugby pitch but to go on what he did and face this battle with MND was just hugely courageous and that makes me incredibly proud.”
