Yorkshire club answer RFL call and apply to join League One

RFL League One

Last week, the RFL announced that they were accepting applications to join League One from 2025, and a Yorkshire side have become the first to publicly declare their interest.

There will be a “managed restructure of the competition structure” below the Super League from next season, and as a result, the RFL are accepting formal declarations of interest in joining the pyramid.

In a statement online, they confirmed: “The RFL recently completed a detailed six-month review involving all Tier Two and Three clubs, and determined that applications would be invited for a possible expansion of League One in 2025.

“A number of informal expressions of interest have already been received.”

RFL League One is currently comprised of just nine teams, as London Skolars and West Wales Raiders have both left the league in recent seasons.

Yorkshire club apply to join RFL League One

Goole Vikings have become the first club to publicly declare their interest in joining the RFL league structure from 2025.

The side play in Goole, situated halfway between Castleford and Hull, and are right in the traditional heartlands of the game.

Founded in 2018, the club are relatively new, but the sport has plenty of history in the town, including one of the game’s biggest early ‘cupsets’ in 1893, when they defeated Leeds.

They currently play in the amateur Yorkshire Men’s League.

Club president, Anthony Whiteley, said: “We’ve always believed Goole is a bit of an untapped area in the M62 heartland.

“I see the interest in rugby league in Goole every day and we want to provide a pathway for local kids, while giving the town of Goole its first professional sports club.”

The club plays at a 3,000-capacity ground which is due for redevelopment in the next year, and they plan on retaining a community club alongside a newly-created pro team.

The club also posted on their Facebook Page about their expressed intent to join League One, promising fans that it wouldn’t hinder their commitment to enhancing the grassroots side of the game in the town.

“Goole Vikings RLFC are extremely excited to confirm that we have submitted an expression of interest, to join Betfred League One for the 2025 season.

“We stress that this move would be an addition to our current playing structure, ensuring amateur Rugby League will still prosper in the Goole area.”

Hopefully, while League One sides from elsewhere in the country have struggled, this would be an example of successful expansion due to being in a definitive rugby league area.
