York Knights have confirmed that veteran prop forward Paul Vaughan will bring the curtain down on his illustrious professional rugby league career at the conclusion of the 2026 Betfred Super League season.
The major news was revealed at the club’s annual end-of-season awards evening, marking the final chapter for a player who has spent more than a decade carving out a reputation as one of the most formidable front-rowers in the global game.
Vaughan, who made the move to the LNER Community Stadium ahead of the 2026 campaign, has enjoyed an extraordinary 14-year career spanning over 300 top-flight appearances across both hemispheres.
After starting his journey in the NRL, the powerhouse prop became a standout name in the competition through stints with the Canberra Raiders, St. George Illawarra Dragons, and Canterbury Bulldogs.
He subsequently made a high-profile switch to the UK, featuring prominently for the Warrington Wolves before linking up with Mark Applegarth’s ambitious York squad.
On the international stage, Vaughan’s bruising style saw him earn caps for Italy and pull on the jersey for the New South Wales Blues in the prestigious State of Origin arena.
During his time in North Yorkshire, Vaughan has acted as a vital leader within the York pack, guiding a developing squad through the rigorous demands of the Super League tier. His experience has proved instrumental as the Knights look to cement their top-flight status.

York Knights star Paul Vaughan announces retirement after 14-year career
Reflecting on his decision to hang up his boots, Vaughan shared an emotional message with supporters.
He said: “Rugby league has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember,
“What started as a childhood dream became a career and a journey I could never have imagined… I walk away from the game grateful, proud and with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”
Vaughan’s retirement opens up a significant leadership vacancy in the Knights’ pack ahead of the 2027 season.
However, head coach Mark Applegarth and the club’s recruitment team have already begun shaping next year’s roster, including high-profile additions like Zak Hardaker and Max Jowitt, ensuring the club remains well-equipped to build on the foundations Vaughan helped solidify during this milestone year.
Vaughan will take to the field for the last time on Thursday, September 8, as the Knights welcome Bradford Bulls to the LNER stadium.
