York Knights have managed to retain a key member of their forward pack heading into next year, with prop Jack Martin agreeing terms on a new deal.
Aussie-born Martin joined the Knights part-way through the 2024 season, as he swapped Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the Queensland Cup for the North Yorkshire outfit.
Not only has he become a fan favourite, but a regular starter too, with the 24-year old starting every game in 2026 bar one that he missed in the early rounds of the year.
Martin is a junior Origin representative, having played for Queensland U19s in 2018, in a side that also included Australia stars Reece Walsh and Tom Dearden.
The enforcer was part of the squad that lifted the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup at Wembley this year, as well as playing a huge role in the squad finishing top of the table and securing the Championship League Leaders Shield.
Extending York Knights stay was a “no-brainer” for overseas prop
Speaking on his new deal, Martin believes that the club is heading in the right direction, and can’t wait to test himself in the top flight, following their promotion to Super League.
He said: “Re-signing for York was a no-brainer for me and one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made. We’ve got a great set of coaching staff here, who are even better people and the playing group is one of the best I’ve been a part of.
“[I’m] Super excited to be in Super League in 2026 and can’t wait to rip in with the boys.”
Head coach Mark Applegarth added that Martin is key member of the squad, and is a perfect player to have around the squad.
He said: “Jack Martin is still young. He does a lot of the tough stuff. He’s a throwback to your old school front rower.
“He enjoys doing the hard stuff that it says on the tin – just no nonsense, straight up and down and he never shirks a carry. He puts his head where it hurts.
“He’s got a great work rate and is always looking to improve. I’m delighted to get him over the line.”
