York Knights have confirmed the signing of former Sydney Roosters man Xavier Va’a as they continue to put their squad together for their first Super League season.
The Knights have had a busy week of announcements with the club confirming the return of Nikau Williams and the addition of Will Roberts, as well as their home and away jerseys. However, they’ve capped the week off with a big signing from down under, with Va’a joining the club on a two-year deal.
The 22-year-old prop has spent time on the books at Sydney Roosters and Brisbane Broncos as a youngster and he made his NRL debut for the former last season, coming off the bench to take on Cronulla Sharks.
The forward gathered plenty of New South Wales Cup experience, too, before he was released from the remainder of his contract by the Roosters in December.
He was linked with a move to Wakefield Trinity but he will be representing York in the Super League and his addition serves as another big boost for the North Yorkshire outfit.
“I’m delighted that we’ve got Xavier over the line,” Mark Applegarth said about his latest recruit.
“He comes highly recommended and his footage looks exactly like the sort of player we were after, but more importantly he seems the kind of player who will fit the culture we have at York.
“He’s come here to improve and to make his mark and he’ll add a lot of depth to our pack and a lot of punch. I’m delighted that we’ve got him.”
Xavier said: “It’s a fresh new start for me. I’ve heard a lot of great things about York, the area and the Club. It just felt right to take this opportunity. Honestly I’m so grateful and excited.
“I’m looking forward to meeting all the boys and getting to work.”
