Woolford hints at loan deals

Huddersfield Giants Head Coach Simon Woolford admitted he is looking at adding loan players to his ranks for the remainder of the season.

Following the recent announcement by Leeds Rhinos that they have signed Brett Ferres and James Harrison from Featherstone Rovers on loan, Woolford is interested in doing the same.

Woolford said, “We only had 21 or 22 players to pick from this week. I spoke to Richard (Agar) about loaning players briefly during the week.

“There are a couple of players out there I belief could help our squad short term.

“I would mainly be looking at any players available in the Super League instead of the Championship.

“Hopefully we can get any of them for a month and get them some game time too.

“But we consider the salary cap and the effect it has on us; however, it is still something we certainly need to look at.”

Huddersfield’s most recent outing saw them go down 31-12 to Hull FC at the Halliwell Jones stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The result sees the Giants drop to seventh in the table after their third straight defeat since the competition resumed.

“There is an old saying in rugby league,” Woolford added.

“You cannot win the game in the first 20 minutes but you can certainly lose it and I thought that is what we did today.

“That is not the Giants of 2020. The defensive effort of that first half an hour was poor.

“They scored a try against the run of play when we had the ball. They scored a couple of easy tries of kicks.

“We showed no real resilience on our try line. But for the next 50 minutes, it was the Giants we have been used to seeing.

“We had a lot of resilience from then and we were prepared to work hard. Our talk, our energy, our enthusiasm could be heard from the stands.

“The difference in the second half as opposed to anything. We needed to start with that intent and that energy, not in the second half when the game was gone.”
