Willie Poching gives update on coaching future after routing Hull

When Willie Poching took over the Wakefield reins from Chris Chester, Trinity were down in the doldrums.

Second-bottom with just four wins, Wakefield were really scraping the barrel.

However, Poching – who played for the West Yorkshire side in his heyday – has turned things around at the club with five wins from their last seven games handing Wakefield a ninth-placed finish in the Super League table.

“It’s a great way for us to finish, I thought we played some really good stuff,” Poching said.

“We played with the right attitude at the start of the first-half and we got the scoreboard ticking on the back of that.

“They changed their attitude a bit in the second-half and made it tough, so it wasn’t quite one way traffic the way we wanted it to be but it was a good way to finish the season.”

Poching revealed that motivation wasn’t a problem for his side, despite having nothing essentially to play for.

“It wasn’t hard at all to get the guys up for it, I got a feel on Tuesday with how they were as they were really keen to build from that Leigh defeat.

“They’ve had a really good attitude this week and they were bouncing and positive which they transferred onto the field this evening.”

Despite such a good record in charge, Poching – as interim head coach – still does not know whether he will be given the job permanently.

“We will see how conversations with the club go.

“They’ve got their processes to go through and obviously I am happy with whatever decision they make.

“I’ve given myself every chance and I’m really happy with how the guys have responded and gone about their business.

“Thankfully we’ve picked us some wins and hopefully that will help me get what I’m after.”
