Willie Peters provides Hull KR injury updates on Mikey Lewis and Tyrone May

Hull KR are still waiting to learn the full extent of the injury Mikey Lewis picked up on Thursday at Wakefield Trinity. The reigning Man of Steel injured his ankle in the act of scoring a try at Belle Vue and while he did manage to carry on briefly with some heavy strapping, Lewis was eventually forced off the field.

He could be seen on crutches after full-time, with a protective boot on his foot, and given such an image, supporters have understandably been fearing the worst. Since Thursday’s game Rovers have sent the half-back for an MRI scan and he will have another scan today to determine just how much game time he could miss over the coming weeks and potentially months.

Of course, Lewis won’t play in Thursday’s clash with Salford Red Devils, but Rovers head coach Willie Peters will have his fingers crossed for good news when his latest scan results come back.

“We’ll know more this afternoon, if not it’ll be tomorrow,” Peters told the press on Monday afternoon. “He’s had an MRI scan, and now he’s got another scan today (Monday).

“We’re obviously hoping that he hasn’t done any further damage to an injury he had in past.

“He’s had an operation in the past, so we’re hoping he hasn’t re-injured it and hopefully it’s just aggravated it, that’s where we’re at but we we’re not going to know until this afternoon, tonight or possibly tomorrow.”

He added: “Naturally, a painful injury like that, he couldn’t walk and it’s taken him a few days to lift his spirits, but he certainly has.

“The next day, I thought he was in great spirits for a guy that wasn’t sure where he was going to be at and for a guy who didn’t know the length of time on the sidelines.

“Real maturity shown there from him and I think if this injury happened a year or two ago, it’s probably a different sort of reaction. It’s easy to get down when you get injured, these guys want to play, so I think it’s just another layer to his growth.”

In what could be a bit of good news for Hull KR, Peters hasn’t ruled Tyrone May out of this week’s round three clash. The half-back missed the trip to Wakefield with a hamstring strain and the expectation was that he would sit out for a couple of weeks.

However, he has made rapid progress and if he can pass a fitness test on Wednesday, he could be in contention to start against the Red Devils.

“He’s going well, he’s responded a lot better than we thought,” Peters said optimistically. “We’re going to give him until the end of the week to see how he goes, until Wednesday, and he’ll have fitness test, then we’ll see where he’s at.

“It was a minor strain and he’s responded really well to it. If he plays, obviously we’ve got one of our main playmakers playing. If he doesn’t pull through he gives an opportunity to someone else.

“We’ve got to be ready for both. We’ve got a plan for if Tyrone plays, and we’ll have one if he doesn’t.”
