Hull KR pre-season progress as Willie Peters explains key target

Willie Peters hopes to see his Hull KR players connect ‘on a deeper level’ as the Robins edge towards their first outing of the new year.

KR have made a number of changes to their first-team squad over the off-season with the likes of Tom Davies, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Rhyse Martin, Micky McIlorum, Bill Leyland, Eribe Doro, Lee Kershaw and Leon Ruan being added to the fold, while a number of senior players have moved on, too. As such, there is a fresh feel at Craven Park as Peters prepares his relatively new look outfit for the start of the Super League season.

That has made the Robins’ warm weather training camp in Tenerife all the more important for Peters, who has been keen to see his players build a bond and connect in the winter sun. Of course, with less than two weeks to go until the club’s only pre-season friendly clash with York and just over four weeks until the league season gets underway, Rovers have been working hard, too. But, the Canary Islands camp has been designed to be about more than just fitness.

“It’s a tough season and we need to prepare them accordingly,” Peters told the Hull KR YouTube channel. “To be a rugby league player these days in Super League, you need to have a resilience and a mental toughness about you.

“To be able to play 26 to 30 games a year, we had a number of players that did that last year, the only way you can prepare them to do that is by putting them in uncomfortable situations and similar situations to what they’ll be in week in, week out. We’re doing that but we’re enjoying ourselves at the same time, mainly because we’re together.

“It’s really important that we connect and get to know each other on a deeper level. Obviously you go to work every day and sometimes it can be just going to work for some people but for us we try to create a mini family here, the players create a brotherhood and the only way you can do that is by getting to know someone better, show some vulnerability and the players are doing that in and around the sessions.”

He added: “The main takeaways from the camp is for everyone to know their job, new players as well as the players that were here last year. We’ve changed and tweaked a few things and it’s important that every player knows that and it’s important that every player connects and gets to know each other on a deeper level.

“If we can get away from this camp having a stronger connection, staff and players all together, and everyone understands and has clarity around their role, it would put us in a strong position for the start of the season.”
