Willie Peters make major Mikey Lewis Man of Steel claim

Hull KR have, unquestionably, had an unbelievable season: largely down to Mikey Lewis.

As recently as 2017, the club was in the Championship, and only stayed up in 2019 thanks to points difference, and 2020 because Toronto Wolfpack withdrew from the competition.

Since then, the club has made remarkable strides both on and off the field, and they could now get their first major trophy since 1985 if they hold on to their position in the Super League table.

Key signings ahead of the current campaign, including Niall Evalds and Oliver Gildart, have contributed heavily to their excellent results, as has head coach Willie Peters, who has done incredibly well to improve on last year’s fourth-placed finish.

However, it’s Mikey Lewis that has been the standout player throughout the season, in a breakthrough campaign for the playmaker.

Willie Peters has said, via the Yorkshire Post: “We don’t know but there’s no doubt he’d be right up there, but there’s still three games to go and three really important games to go.

“Mikey’s next step is to go to a place like Wigan, dominate and be in control of his game. That doesn’t mean he has to go and score three tries; it’s all about the areas we value as a club and he and his team-mates value.

“I’d back him to stand up in any game. He’s still young and not the finished product but the season he’s had, there’s been a lot of growth and maturity, and he’s played a key part for us.

“There’s still improvement in Mikey and Hull KR. We hope that’s this year but you’ll see the best of Mikey and Hull KR over the next couple of years.”

He was one of the front-runners while the points were publicly available for Man of Steel, and could well take home the coveted trophy.
