Willie Peters ‘hopeful’ of Hull KR fitness boost ahead of Super League opener

Hull KR

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters is optimistic that Sam Luckley will be fit enough to feature in the opening round of the Super League season.

The Robins get their league campaign underway on Thursday night when they take on York Knights at the LNER Community Stadium. Last year’s treble winners have a hectic month ahead, with the World Club Challenge and a trip to Las Vegas to come, and they’d dearly love to get their title defence underway with a win.

And, the fitness of Luckley, would go a long way in North Yorkshire, with the prop’s size and offload ability central to what KR do.

Luckley is coming off the back of knee surgery, which was required after playing through the pain of a torn patella tendon for a chunk of last season. The injury also led to a meniscus issue and following the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, he was forced to go under the knife to resolve the problem.

As such, he was forced to sit out of the majority of pre-season, but with the start of the Super League approaching, he is on the verge of full fitness once more.

Hull KR injury update

“Sam started training with us this week and we’re hopeful that he will pull through,” Peters said on Monday afternoon, giving an update on his situation. “At this stage he’s on track.”

KR will be without new signing Tom Amone, though, due to fractured hand, while Jordan Dezaria will miss the season opener with a hamstring issue, Peters has confirmed.

“Tom will miss this week and then he’ll hopefully be back for the World Club Challenge,” he added. “He’s training, it’s a hand issue so he can do all the running but contact has been an issue for him. He’s starting to get that now.

“He’s probably done more running than he’s ever done, Tommy.

“Jordan Dezaria, he’s not playing, he’s had a hamstring strain. Other than that, everyone is OK.”

Speaking generally about fitness following Friday night’s win over Lock Lane in the Challenge Cup, Peters added: “Everyone has come through OK. We’re fortunate there because it sounds like with other teams there’s been some injuries across the competition, but we’re OK from the weekend.

“I don’t like talking about injuries, it’s a tough physical game and we’re playing again this week and we have another 30 games to play. I respect that I need to update the fans and where we’re at but I don’t go into it too much.”
