An announcement will be made in the coming days regarding Willie Peters’ future with the Hull KR boss refusing to fully broach the subject following the Robins’ win over St Helens.
Rovers picked up their first home win of the season on Friday night as they thumped St Helens 52-10 at Craven Park in what was easily their strongest league showing of the season so far.
Mikey Lewis and Joe Burgess both scored hat-tricks on the night, with Jez Litten, Joe Batchelor and Jai Whitbread also touching down as KR secured just their second win in this season’s Super League.
However, the build up to the contest was overshadowed by talk of Peters’ future, with reports emerging that the Robins boss is bound for the NRL and Papua New Guinea Chiefs at the end of the season. Peter V’Landys and Peters’ agent Braith Anasta have spoken openly about it down under, seemingly confirming the deal, but Peters opted not to address the reports.
Instead, he simply pointed to a statement that will be made in the coming days, before derby week.
“I respect and understand why you’re asking the question but at the moment it’s certainly not for me to put any statements out,” Peters said after the game. “The club will look to do it in time in terms of what is happening but at the moment I’m just focused on what we’re doing now and tonight’s game. There’ll be some announcements coming but it’s not going to come from me.
Asked about his desire to prevent the story spilling into derby week, he added: “I hope so, I certainly don’t want it to be about me, it’s not about me at all.
“I want to move forward and the derby is a big week and it needs to get the attention it deserves. The club and rightly so, will need to put something out and that will happen in the near future.”
Of course, Peters has been strongly linked with the England job ahead of this autumn’s World Cup, but what his decision means for that remains to be seen.
“I’m not sure what’s happening tomorrow so let’s just work that out first,” he said in response to a question on the national team. “As I say, let’s just wait and see at the weekend and whatever the weekend brings.
“I want to move forward really quickly but it’s the club. I work for Hull KR and it’s important it’s done the right way. The people above me will sort that out.”
