Willie Peters confirms Hull KR injury latest amid Niall Evalds admission

Hull KR boss Willie Peters has high hopes that Niall Evalds’ injury lay off will be a short one.

The full-back picked up a groin injury while representing the Robins in last weekend’s Hull derby, with the injury coming inside the opening quarter of the contest. It was a fruitful 20 minutes, with Evalds, who has been in electric form since making the move to KR, helping Rovers into an 18-0 lead, but it was all he could manage in the game.

Peters has taken the opportunity to allay any long-term injury fears, though, and while Evalds will miss this week’s clash with Leeds Rhinos at Headingley, the head coach is optimistic about the possibility of him featuring against London Broncos later this month.

“Hopefully Niall is only going to be one week,” said Peters as KR prepare to travel to West Yorkshire for a game that will serve as Brad Arthur’s home bow after taking charge of the Rhinos last week.

“It’s possibly a one to two-week injury. We’re not 100 per cent sure but it’s not as bad as we first thought.”

The news will come as a boost to supporters, who may have been fearing the worst regarding the former Castleford Tigers man’s injury. Fans will also be pleased to see Sam Luckley return to action this week.

The forward missed the derby after failing a head injury assessment in the loss to Catalans Dragons, but he has jumped through the necessary hoops to make this weekend’s squad.

“Sam will come back into contention for this week. He’s passed all the protocols and has trained with us,” Peters said.

He added: “They had a couple of days doing recovery and then came into training (Tuesday) and were in good spirits. You are up for a derby, but it’s important that you play well the week after. It’s important that you back up, and we’ve spoken about that.”

Rovers currently sit third in the Super League table, level on points with Warrington Wolves, but four points behind the pace of league leaders Wigan Warriors. As such, while they will be more than wary of the bounce Arthur could give Leeds this week, they know a win would see them keep up the pressure up on Wigan, who travel to Hull FC on Saturday.

Without taking the Broncos for granted, I’d give Evalds two weeks to cement the recovery and then back again for the Warrington game.
