Hull KR boss Willie Peters had his heart set on joining Papua New Guinea Chiefs, his agent Braith Anasta has revealed.
Peters is expected to leave the Robins at the end of the Super League season to take charge of the NRL’s newest club who will enter the competition for the first time in 2028. It’s a role that was highly sought after, with a number of head coaches interviewing for the position.
However, Peters is said to have been the most impressive candidate and according to reports, that deal is now all but done, with the KR boss set to sign a four-year deal to take charge and become the franchise’s first head coach.
And, while Peters is yet to comment on the switch, his agent has been speaking down under about why the Rovers boss felt he was the perfect man to take charge.
“He told me that PNG was always his No.1 priority,” Anasta said, per the Daily Telegraph.
“He loved the idea about starting a new franchise and he understands how passionate the people of PNG are about rugby league.
“He had success building a team at Hull KR and sees a resemblance of that in the PNG team. He was experience in that area and it is perfect for him.
“He is a man’s man, players love him. The Chiefs are going to be in their own community and spend a lot of time with each other, which is similar to Hull KR. He wanted that.
“I didn’t entertain interest from other clubs as much as I usually would. I didn’t want to stuff any clubs around.
“He wanted the job, and he thinks it suits him.”
