Willie Peters admits to “difficult” headache that Hull KR face beyond Hull FC clash

Hull KR boss Willie Peters on Sky Sports

Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has admitted that the club have a “very difficult” headache to deal with beyond today’s Challenge Cup clash against their bitter rivals Hull FC.

All eyes in rugby league will turn to Hull today as the Black and Whites host the Robins in a Challenge Cup that’s set to be a classic, with the teams sat first and second in Super League and meeting for the first time in the cup since 1986.

It’s also confirmed to be Hull FC’s largest home Challenge Cup attendance since 1961, highlighting the sense of occasion and whilst the focus is on the present, Hull KR could have a headache emerge in the coming weeks.

That headache is one that plenty of head coaches would wish for as it’s one of the selection nature with Willie Peters spoilt for choices among the backs following the arrival of Arthur Mourgue.

Mourgue, who was signed for 2026 but brought in early, looks set to spend 2025 at full-back and that presents the “very difficult” question of what to do with Jack Broadbent?

Thus far, Broadbent has played in the halves, centres, on the wing and at full-back with the ex-Castleford man proving to be Hull KR’s star utility but the reality is that Broadbent is almost too good to simply be a utility.

That creates a headache for where and how he fits into the team given the strength of the Hull KR backline, although Peters doesn’t need to make a decision this week as Arthur Mourgue is cup-tied.

As such, Broadbent will start against Hull FC at full-back after slotting in on the wing last week and when speaking to Serious About Rugby League, Peters admitted that the versatility, whilst extremely valuable, also makes for some difficult decisions.

“It’s very difficult because Jack can play wing, he can play centre and he can play full-back but he’s extremely valuable to us,” the Australian explained, adding: “Whether he’s in the 17 or not, he’ll always be that next man up.

“Obviously, he wants to play and he’ll just keep pushing every week to play and make things difficult, which it is, but he’s a valued member of our team, that’s for sure.”

When Hull KR return to Super League, they face Wigan Warriors and providing everyone is healthy, a major decision will have to be made there but Peters wasn’t getting ahead of himsef.

“We don’t know,” he admitted when asked who would play.

“Yeah, we’re not sure what happens after this week. He (Broadbent) ended up playing (versus Huddersfield). I was always gonna play Arthur, I wanted to give Arthur an opportunity to play yesterday and then he (Broadbent) ended up getting his opportunity so that’s why we don’t look too far forward because anything can happen.”

Joe Burgess pulling out meant Broadbent slotted in on the wing on Sunday afternoon against Huddersfield in a 50-4 win with Mourgue also starring at full-back. How often, or how in terms of logistics both Broadbent and Mourgue will take to the field this season is something that will be intriguing to see.

I don’t think Broadbent has ever played in the halves for KR but he’s covered most of the 3/4 positions. It is though, what it is. Broadbent is an excellent utility player, not a specialist. I would be inclined to pick Morgue at FB, the only reservation I have, if Morgue was injured I would not move Mikey there. This cost Wigan the cup-tie against FC. While Hiku is only an average FB, it makes more sense to move him there.
