After a disappointing defeat at home to Wigan last night, Daryl Powell may turn to some of the first team talent he didn’t include in his side against the Warriors yesterday after they shone in victory over Hull FC’s reserves today.
The Man of the Match was Connor Wrench who scored a hat-trick at centre. There was also a try for Matt Davis who has been in and out of the Warrington first team all season whilst Ellis Longstaff, who was Warrington’s breakout star of 2021, also scored for the Wire in a 36-16 win over Hull FC.
There weren’t as many notable names in Hull FC’s line-up although Davy Litten, who has just returned from a loan spell at Whitehaven and was included in Brett Hodgson’s 21-man squad for today’s win over Toulouse, started at fullback whilst Aidan Burrell was at 13.
Huddersfield’s reserves hosted Wigan’s as well today with Nathan Mason and Sam Hewitt being the two high profile names in the Huddersfield line-up. Both recently played against St Helens on Easter Monday and performed admirably but neither could help the Giants stop a rampant Wigan side who won the second half 22-0 to win 32-10 after both sides had gone into the break level. Winger Josh Milthorpe caught the eye for the Giants scoring both their tries.
The Warriors had Umyla Hanley in their side. Son of the great Ellery Hanley, he featured heavily for Wigan last season. The biggest name in their side was winger and off-season signing Abbas Miski. Opportunities have been few and far between for him since joining Wigan but he showed what he can do today with a brace of tries.
Salford and Castleford perhaps played out the most entertaining game of the day in a 34-all draw. Salford didn’t include any Super League stars but the Tigers did with Cheyse Blair and Suaia Matagi starting in the pack whilst Sosaia Feki got some rare minutes at centre.
