Wigan Warriors v Warrington Wolves player ratings as 4 score 9/10

Warrington Wolves

Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves met at The Brick Community Stadium tonight in a battle between first and second in Super League with Warrington coming out on top with a whopping 40-4 win.

After Hull FC shocked Wigan Warriors last week, it allowed Warrington Wolves the opportunity to take the top spot in Super League if they were to win by 20 points or more.

Dubbed by many as the biggest game of the Super League season so far, the game got off to a blistering start when Liam Byrne’s first carry of the ball saw him dispossessed with a crunching tackle from Paul Vaughan and Luke Yates.

It was a tackle that set the tone for an incredible first half. Here is how each player fared across the 80 minutes after a famous Warrington Wolves win.

FB: Zach Eckersley – 6

Error following a smart kick but was able to clean up to avoid conceding a try. Brilliant with ball in hand when running but passed into touch on a promising attack and offered Thewlis his intercept try.

WG: Abbas Miski – 5

Carried strong out of yardage but the ball rarely went his way.

CE: Liam Farrell – 6

Back into the centres and then had to move to dummy half for much of the second half after O’Neill’s injury.

CE: Jake Wardle – 7

Dangerous outlet on the left edge as always. Had to move to the right after O’Neill’s injury and continued to perform well. Wigan’s only real threat in the second half.

WG: Liam Marshall -6

Took his try very well and helped his forwards out with his carries out of territory and showed that danger when breaking free late on.

SO: Jack Farrimond -5

Very quiet but operated smartly out of dummy half. Did make a dangerous break courtesy of a smart step. His pass was intercepted for Ashton’s try.

SH: Harry Smith – 7

His 40/20 early in the first half was key in turning the momentum of the game and his kick assist to Liam Marshall on the following set was even better.

PR: Liam Byrne – 5

Had the ball forced out of his grasp on the very first carry after a huge tackle from Vaughan and Yates. Atoned with some tough tackling.

HK: Brad O’Neill – 6

Defensively always good. Constant tackles from marker and second efforts. Had his night ended early with what looked like a concerning injury.

PR: Luke Thompson – 7

Running with brilliant intent. Seemed to have the bit between his teeth. The standout for Wigan.

SR: Junior Nsemba – 6

Such a handful to grab hold of when he carries the ball. Helped him make valuable extra metres. Play the ball error at one end allowed Warrington the ball to score at the other.

SR: Sam Walters – 5

Early handling error and was then subbed for the impact forwards from the bench. His head-to-head with Dufty was among his highlights sadly.

LF: Kaide Ellis – 5

Made a couple of good offloads. Forced a knock on from Ben Currie.

Interchanges
Ethan Havard -5

Carried strong and made an impact off the bench.

Patrick Mago – 6

First carry saw him take four Warrington players with him and was a welcome boost of energy for the crowd.

Tyler Dupree – 5

First carry of the ball saw him break free but was dragged down from behind.

Harvie Hill – 5

Fresh legs but did nothing of note in a game that Wigan were dominated.

FB: Matt Dufty – 8

Clever kick through for the Lindop try and his pass drew in Abbas Miski for Lindop’s second. Miss-out pass for Matty Ashton executed perfectly. Constant reminders of why he has the most try contributions all season after earning three assists. Late sin bin took the shine off.

WG: Josh Thewlis – 8

Seemed unaware that Smith’s deep kick was a 40/20 as he was happy to watch it out. Lapse in judgement? Kicked well to make up for it and then scored an intercept try just like his fellow winger Matty Ashton.

CE: Rodrick Tai – 9

Dominant in defence again in the first game since his contract extension. His pressure on Zach Eckersley forced the Wigan man’s lazy pass that Josh Thewlis was able to intercept. Bagged a last minute try himself to top a brilliant performance.

CE: Arron Lindop – 9

Took his try after just two minutes very well. Second try was even better as he stepped in and ran 35 metres to dive over. An incredibly bright talent for the future who Sam Burgess has shown plenty of trust in.

WG: Matty Ashton – 9

Cleaned up a Harry Smith kick very tidily on a couple of occasions. Brilliant anticipation saw him go the distance with an intercept try and finished his second as expected.

SO: George Williams – 7

Forced a handling error from Sam Walters with a brilliant tackle. Draws so much attention near the goal line and exhibited his leadership skills throughout.

SH: Josh Drinkwater – 7

Kicking game has been criticised before but made sure to always test the inexperienced Eckersley. Combined well with Williams.

PR: Luke Yates – 9

Gave away a sloppy penalty early on that allowed Wigan to first get a foot in the game but from that minute onwards he was near perfect. Played huge minutes and did so brilliantly.

HK: Sam Powell – 7

Calm and controlled against his former club.

PR: Paul Vaughan – 7

Was asked to do plenty by Sam Burgess and met that task.

SR: Matty Nicholson – 7

Another to quietly go about his business and did so well against his former club.

SR: Adam Holroyd – 7

Crashed over to score his second try in as many weeks and even Junior Nsemba couldn’t stop him.

LF: Ben Currie – 8

Always performs at a 7/10 or better, Mr Consistent for the best part of a decade for Warrington.

Interchanges
Zane Musgrove – 6

Did well to get the ball away as he was pushed into touch.

Jordy Crowther – 7

Error early in the second half but just played physically and made a difference.

Danny Walker – 7

Came on late in the first half and upped the speed nicely, a trend that continued in the second half.

Max Wood – 7

Huge impact off the bench when carrying the ball. Plenty of metres after contact.
