Wigan Warriors hosted Hull FC a week after the Black and Whites’ embarrassing defeat at Magic Weekend and they lost once again as Wigan won 22-4 in a far-from-perfect performance from both sides.
Hull FC had lost 29-4 to London Broncos at Elland Road in arguably the lowest point in a season full of lows as the Broncos drew level on points with them.
As for Wigan, their trip to Elland Road was far more successful as they beat rivals St Helens 20-0 and kept pace with Super League leaders Hull KR.
That was despite lacking several players through suspension and injury with captain Liam Farrell a late absentee after pulling up in the warm-up.
Farrell was absent once again today meaning winger Liam Marshall skippered the side on his 200th career appearance. Meanwhile, fellow winger Abbas Miski was afforded a rest with Jacob Douglas handed the start in his place.
Jack Farrimond featured in the halves alongside Adam Keighran with Harry Smith suspended and Bevan French still injured, whilst Hull FC saw Jack Charles partner Morgan Smith.
Wigan Warriors stumble to win over Hull FC
It didn’t take long for Wigan Warriors to get the scoring underway and they did so through Jacob Douglas who scored his first senior try for Wigan on just his second appearance to make it 4-0. Ten minutes later and Wigan were in on the right-hand side again but this time it was centre Zach Eckersley scoring with Adam Keighran knocking over to make it 10-0.
Hull FC could have easily folded but they showed their resilience and after a brilliant Lewis Martin break, Jed Cartwright took advantage of sloppy defence to crash over and pull it back to 10-4 with that score remaining until the half.
Jed Cartwright didn’t come back out for the second forty after failing a HIA and despite Hull FC making a fist of it, Wigan Warriors’ pressure paid dividends with Junior Nsemba crashing over shortly before Jack Farrimond danced through to make it 22-4.
Shortly after Wigan went down to twelve after the video referee looked at Patrick Mago’s late hit on Jack Ashworth
Man of the Match
Jai Field had very little to do defensively but did all that was required when needed but it was his attacking flair that shone. In a game that was relatively stale, Field’s injections of pace lit the field up and he carried the most threat of any player in Cherry and White by some margin.
