Wigan Warriors think Owen Farrell interview points to huge transfer

Wigan Warriors have again been linked with a sensational move for Owen Farrell.

Part of this is due to the impending departure of Morgan Smithies who currently occupies Farrell’s father’s iconic number 13 shirt.

Owen is the son of Andy Farrell who is also involved in Rugby Union at present.

The two time Man of Steel winner was a Wigan legend in the number 13 shirt and many feel his son would make an excellent ball playing 13 at Wigan should the Cherry and Whites complete a sensational coup for the England Rugby Union fly half following World Cup heartache.

Some fans even felt a cryptic line from an interview with ITV showed he was headed to Wigan as an emotional Farrell reflected on the end of a World Cup cycle and an inevitable changing of the guard, he said: “Some people will be going elsewhere.”

Some have taken this to mean he is headed to Wigan but a report from the Telegraph seems to indicate otherwise.

They believe he will remain in the plans for the 2027 World Cup:

“The standard-bearer for the next four-year cycle is most likely to be Owen Farrell. Whether the Saracens fly-half retains the captaincy all the way to the World Cup in Australia in 2027 remains to be seen.

“But given the physical conditioning of the 32-year-old, and the way he looks after his body, it is thought that Borthwick believes Farrell will play a key role in the next cycle, similar fashion to that leadership and game management influence that Johnny Sexton delivered for Ireland over the last four years.”

To many Wigan already have their new number 13 in the shape of Luke Thompson.

Thompson was perhaps Super League’s best forward, maybe even best player, in 2019 as St Helens won the title and he claimed the Harry Sunderland Award.

Thompson then joined Canterbury Bulldogs part way through 2020 but is now back in Super League with Wigan.

He seems like a likely candidate to take the 13 shirt even though he is widely known as a prop but he has frequently played 13 in the NRL and has the skills to do so.
