Wigan Warriors suffer huge John Bateman blow

Rugby league players are tough and everyone knows that.

But, most of the time, stars play outside their comfort zones in a bid to help their own side out and that’s exactly what Wigan Warriors star John Bateman did at the Magic Weekend.

The former Bradford Bulls star broke his rib but played on against St Helens in a valiant defeat, but Wigan boss Matty Peet has confirmed he will be out for a month though Kaide Ellis returns from suspension.

Peet said: “Kaide Ellis is back in, we lose Brad Singleton to the suspension and John Bateman broke a rib so he’s going to be out for around a month.”

Peet also knows what kind of trouble Hull FC poses to his side ahead of this Friday’s home fixture against the Black and Whites: “We prepare for the best of Hull and as we know, when we’ve faced them there’s been a one-point swing and a loss, the class is there for everyone to see.”

“I think it’ll be as intense as the other two games against them this year.”

The Warriors will, however, have Brad Singleton banned for three games following a dangerous tackle on Saints’ Curtis Sironen from the Magic Weekend derby clash.

Meanwhile, Singleton isn’t the only player falling foul of the Disciplinary Match Review Panel.

Following the latest round of Betfred Super League fixtures at the Magic Weekend, the Match Review Panel issued the following sanctions:

Connor Wynne (Hull FC) – Grade B Late Hit on Passer – 1 Match Penalty Notice
Dean Hadley (Hull KR) – Grade B Late Hit on Kicker – 1 Match Penalty Notice
Brad Fash (Hull FC) – Grade A Dangerous Contact – 0 Match Penalty Notice
George Williams (Warrington) – Grade A Late Hit on Passer – 0 Match Penalty Notice
Matt Prior (Leeds) – Grade B Late Hit on Kicker – 2 Match Penalty Notice
Liam Watts (Castleford) – Grade B High Tackle – 2 Match Penalty Notice
Rob Butler (Wakefield) – Grade C Dangerous Throw – 2 Match Penalty Notice
Sitaleki Akauola (Salford) – Grade B Intentional Trip – 2 Match Penalty Notice
Brodie Croft (Salford) – Grade A Late Hit on Passer – 0 Match Penalty Notice
Sione Mata’utia (St Helens) – Grade A Late Hit on Passer – 1 Match Penalty Notice
Brad Singleton (Wigan) – Grade C High Tackle – 3 Match Penalty Notice

The following player was handed a caution:

Danny Levi (Huddersfield) – High Tackle

Whilst Levi, Fash, Williams and Croft will not miss any games, the same cannot be said of eight others that were charged by the MRP.

Wynne will miss Hull’s game against Wigan Warriors on Friday night, with Singleton also missing that game and two further fixtures for Wigan.
