Wigan Warriors suffer another big blow

Yesterday Wigan Warriors claimed a vital win.

The Warriors continued their impressive form which has seen then defeat Super League and World Champions St Helens as well as league leaders Warrington Wolves to add to Wakefield Trinity’s woes.

Now the Warriors have leapfrogged Warrington to take top spot from their rivals thanks to first half tries from Liam Marshall, Abbas Miski and Ethan Havard before Bevan French’s 100th try sealed a 22-6 win in the second half.

After the game, Matt Peet said it was good to see Wigan’s youngsters stand out.

“I thought they were good against a tough team. To see Harvie, Junior and Brad O’Neill in the mix is great for the club and they all showed glimpses of what they are capable of,” he said on the Wigan website.

However, it seems every week Wigan are suffering a big blow in terms of injuries. They have lost Cade Cust and Jai Field recently leaving them reliant on make shift halfback Joe Shorrocks.

Now they might be relying on make shift forwards with Brad Singleton and Mike Cooper out and now Kaide Ellis added to the mix as Peet confirmed his injury: “Kaide Ellis was set to play but he pulled his hamstring in training this week so unfortunately, he is likely to be out for a month. With regards to Liam Farrell he is fine, but the smart thing to do was to give him a rest.”

Fortunately, Super League has a break this week minimising slightly the damage of Ellis’ absence.

On this break Peet said: “I think the fact the break comes now won’t make a difference. I hope every player we have in this system can play for England – that is where they have to aspire to be.

“Hopefully we have a few lads that play for England, but if not, it is an opportunity to freshen up and get some work done.”
