Wigan Warriors strike dual reg agreement with Championship club

Wigan Warriors

Oldham have announced they have struck a dual reg partnership with Super League heavyweights Wigan Warriors. The two clubs have developed something of a link over the off-season following George Hirst’s move from Boundary Park to the Brick Community Stadium.

Hirst will return to Oldham on loan for the 2025 season and the deal also led to last weekend’s pre-season friendly between the two outfits. However, the Championship side have now announced that Wigan will be their dual reg partners for the upcoming season.

As such, Wigan will be able to send players across Greater Manchester  to feature under Sean Long in the Championship this season and pick up some valuable game time, while Oldham will benefit from being able to call upon fringe Super League players.

“For us it offers the best possible chance of having a competitive squad through what we expect to be a very demanding season,” managing director Mike Ford told Roughyeds TV about the deal with Wigan Warriors, while Oldham have also announced a similar agreement with League One side Rochdale Hornets.

“Wigan was a conversation we had as part of George Hirst moving. Me and Sean spoke with Kris Radlinski and Matt Peet and wanted that partnership extending to players. They have a lot of good young players – as we saw in their win over us at Boundary Park on Sunday – who need better quality rugby than the reserves. So that is something for us that is there should we feel we want to dip into it during a relentless Championship season.

“The other way with Rochdale is good if we manage to keep a healthy squad here – they will need game-time too, so this partnership would allow Rochdale a look at some of our players, give them minutes and strengthen their squad with that too.”
