Wigan Warriors star man agrees lengthy new deal despite NRL interest

Wigan Warriors

One of Wigan Warriors’ star players has signed a new deal that could see him stay with the club until the end of the 2029 season.

Matt Peet’s side have done a brilliant job of tying down their star players in recent years with long-term contracts handed to the likes of Bevan French, Jake Wardle and Junior Nsemba, as well as Peet and his assistants Sean O’Loughlin and Thomas Leuluai.

However, Wigan have now tied down another star man for at least the next two years and potentially even the next four as the Warriors have confirmed a new deal for flying full-back Jai Field.

Field has committed to a new two-year deal that keeps him with the club until the end of the 2027 season whilst the contract features options in his favour for him to stay for both 2028 and 2029.

Sky Sports’ Jenna Brooks broke the news on the broadcaster’s coverage of Super League’s 5,000th game, as she stated: “Despite plenty of interest from the NRL, one of Super League’s superstars has agreed to stay on in this competition.

“That player I am talking about is the Wigan Warriors’ full-back Jai Field who has agreed a new two-year contract with options beyond in the player’s favour.

“Huge news tonight that we will keep one of the greatest players in Super League for at least another two years so that is until the end of 2027.”

Wigan also shared the news themselves as they released a statement confirming the four-year deal for their star man.

A club statement read: “WIgan Warriors are delighted to confirm that Jai Field has signed a new four-year deal with the club. The contract is for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, with two options for 2028 and 2029.”

On signing the new deal, Jai Field said: “I’m really pleased to be extending my stay here at Wigan. I’m very grateful to the Club and the fans who have shown so much faith in me over the past few seasons.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of being here so far and looking forward to hopefully some more great memories here with this group and Club.”

Warriors Head Coach Matt Peet said: “We’re delighted Jai has committed his future to the Club. He’s a quality player who brings energy, excitement, and a real X-factor to our team.

“Just as importantly, he’s a great teammate and a big part of our culture. We believe his best years are still ahead of him, and we’re proud that they’ll be in a Wigan shirt.”
