Wigan Warriors star left out of club’s pre-season training camp in show of Matt Peet’s character

Wigan Warriors fans may have been worried when they discovered star winger Liam Marshall had been left at home whilst the rest of the squad headed off to Portugal for a pre-season training camp.

Could he be injured? Surely there hasn’t been a falling out? In the end, the reason behind Marshall’s absence is simple and uplifting.

His partner is about to give birth and the decision from Matt Peet was Marshall to stay at home so that he can be there when the baby is born.

Another example of Peet’s outstanding character and the culture that has been developed at the club over the last few years.

Marshall explains decision

Speaking on the club’s official website, Marshall explained why the decision was made for him to stay at home:

“I found out about the pre-season camp to Portugal, the lads are over there for ten days but my wife Meg is due to give birth any time really.

“So I had a couple of chats with Matty (Peet) about it, umming and aaahing about what would be best. Maybe I’d go for a short period or something.

“Matty just decided and we decided together that it was best to just stay at home just in case anything did happen. Obviously it’s not too far away but a lot can happen in six hours or so.”

He also elaborated on how he will continue to train during this period:

“Training wise, I’m still doing my stuff and coming here and doing my gym at Robin Park. I’m training with the academies in the afternoon so I’m not missing out on any training in that way.

“It’s probably just being around the lads that I’m missing out on but to be honest they’re probably glad of the break from me to be fair. That’s the reason why I’m not over in Portugal though.”

Marshall’s legacy

Liam Marshall is quickly developing a legendary status at the club with tries in consecutive seasons to secure trophies.

In 2022, the winger was on hand to touch down Harry Smith’s kick to win the Challenge Cup Final against Huddersfield Giants before scoring the only try of the game in a 10-2 win over Catalans Dragons in 2023 to secure the Super League title.

Marshall will be hoping to add to these moments in 2024 in front of his new born baby.
