Wigan Warriors star hits landmark figure and St Helens man climbs all-time Super League rankings

Super League is nearing the completion of the regular season with Magic Weekend on the horizon and then just five more rounds after that. Round 21 saw a new leader crowned as Wigan Warriors lost at Headingley in a cruel blow on one man’s 400th career appearance.

That was just one milestone met in Super League this week with several other players hitting landmark figures for either tries or appearances, including a St Helens man who is knocking on the door of legendary status.

We’ve assessed each of these individual achievements below, starting with Liam Farrell who made his 400th career appearance on Saturday as Wigan Warriors lost to Leeds Rhinos.

A win would have seen Wigan return to the top of Super League but it wasn’t to be on the 34-year-old’s milestone day as he made his 376th appearance in Cherry and White and 400th overall.

Farrell has earned Dream Team honours on six occasions and won 15 major honours with the club. but is still a long way short of matching coach and relative Sean O’Loughlin’s 459 appearances for the club.

More Super League milestones tumble

Another legend of the Super League era who hit a landmark this round is Tommy Makinson who scored his 187nd Super League try, moving him to seventh in the all-time rankings for the competition.

He moved past Ryan Atkins and is now hunting down current Wakefield Trinity star Jermaine McGillvary who is seven ahead on 196. It seems likely that Makinson will break the 200 barrier and surpass current head coach Paul Wellens next year when he is at Catalans.

Both Makinson and Farrell are part of an elite group of players to have scored 100 Super League tries or more but another joined the list this weekend as Zak Hardaker scored his 100th and 101st in Leigh’s hammering of Hull FC.

That brace also brought his career total to 150, whilst teammate Darnell McIntosh marked his 150th Super League appearance as well. The winger played the majority of his games with Huddersfield Giants before joining Hull FC, from whom Leigh signed him earlier in the season.

There were celebrations for Matty Ashton too as his brace against London Broncos took him to 100 career tries with the Warrington Wolves flyer stretching the field for both as he racked up a whopping 232 metres in the 36-22 win.

More milestones and records could fall at Magic Weekend which kicks off on Saturday with a bumper day including Wigan Warriors vs St Helens and Leeds Rhinos vs Warrington Wolves.
