Wigan Warriors star hails importance of fan favourite during rehab

Wigan Warriors star Brad O’Neill has spoken about his long journey to recovery with the hooker hailing the importance of one fan favourite during his rehabilitation.

O’Neill was trending towards his best season yet in 2024 with the young hooker flourishing in the number nine shirt following the exit of Sam Powell, however, an injury would end O’Neill’s season early.

In a devastating 40-4 loss to Warrington Wolves in Round 19, Wigan’s biggest loss was O’Neill with the hooker suffering the second ACL injury of his career – one that would end his season.

The 22-year-old had made 21 appearances to that point, including in the World Club Challenge and Challenge Cup Final wins, and he has now spoken to club media about his rehabilitation.

“The body and mind are feeling very good,” explained O’Neill, who after five hard months is back running – something that represents a major milestone in his recovery.

“All you think about post-surgery is running but you can only start when you’re ready. It’s taken a lot of hard work but it’s a positive position to be in which is credit to our physios.”

Incredibly, it is the second ACL injury that the young star has suffered with O’Neill suffering the injury back in 2019 whilst still playing with the academy. In a way, that helped prep the 22-year-old.

“I knew what to expect,” he revealed.

“Those first weeks after surgery are the toughest but it’s important not to look too far ahead and instead focus on short-term goals.”

Something else that has benefitted O’Neill is the fact that Wigan Warriors fan favourite Willie Isa is also rehabbing from a lengthy injury. Isa suffered an ankle fracture and dislocation in the Challenge Cup win over Castleford Tigers back in April, meaning he has been there for O’Neill throughout his recovery.

O’Neill explained: “You know you’re going to experience tough days so it’s about embracing those and enjoying the good ones. The strength of having a partner is that you have someone to help you get through the tough days.

“I’ve been in with Willie throughout and having someone to work alongside makes the process easier. There have been times when I’ve been frustrated with wanting to do more, however, Willie will be the one to make sure I understand why. It’s all a learning curve in which I hope I’m that person for Willie through his injury.”

Isa signed a one-year extension late in 2024 whilst O’Neill has committed his future to the club by signing a deal until the end of the 2027 season.

Reflecting on 2024 and the success he experienced on the pitch and then had to experience whilst off it, O’Neill stated: “They were all proud moments and massive milestones in my career. Last year was special but sad because of the way it had to end.

“It was tough having to watch from the stands, however, I’m proud of what the group went on to achieve and I’m delighted for those lads who got the opportunity. These are special times and I’m so proud to be a part of this group.”
