Wigan Warriors signing Abbas Miski identifies the importance of culture to the club’s pre-season

It’s safe to say 2021 wasn’t the year Wigan had hoped for.

After finishing top in 2020 and going so close to Grand Final glory, they Warriors slipped to fourth in the table and crashed out of the play-offs in week one after an 8-0 defeat to Leeds.

Since then, there’s been plenty of change. Matty Peet has been installed as Head Coach with a remarkable support structure of legends embedded around him whilst a number of exciting signings have been secured including Abbas Miski.

The Lebanese international played in the 2017 World Cup for his country and has NRL experience with Manly as well as experience in this country having caught the eye at London last year. Signed by Wigan on a two-year deal, he could be one of the surprise packages of Super League in 2022 and seems to be enjoying a difficult albeit beneficial pre-season with the Warriors.

On Wigan’s official Twitter page, Miski identified why he felt Wigan’s pre-season regime will give them a solid base from which to build in 2022: “Every club has a tough pre-season, the content of the actual work is generally tough no matter where you go. But there’s a big emphasis at this club on other aspects not just the physical side of things but the culture side, the mental side, individually.

“Although they are long days of physical work it is mixed with other aspects of your game you need to improve and this club places a big emphasis on that.”

He was also keen to note the role smaller tasks play in building a solid ethos and making him a better player: “Those things just spark conversations, getting to know one another, what people like or don’t like, how people think. It helps you get closer to that person and that eventually helps you become a better player on the field because you need to work alongside these guys.”

Wigan’s pre-season truly gets underway this afternoon as they take on Newcastle Thunder where Miski could make his Wigan debut alongside fellow new recruit Ramon Silva.
