Wigan Warriors sign star to long-term deal

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet speaks to the media.

Wigan Warriors have confirmed that they have signed star winger Liam Marshall to a new four-year deal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2028 season.

Currently, Marshall is the top try scorer in Super League this season with the 28-year-old having scored 20 goals in his 18 appearances, leading the way by six tries from Ash Handley and Matt Dufty.

Marshall has played for Wigan Warriors since 2017 and has played a total of 175 games across that period, scoring an impressive 146 tries.

He came through Wigan’s academy and has now ascended to the top of Super League and is also one of Matt Peet’s trusted players, serving as part of the club’s leadership team.

Wigan Warriors announced the news of his new deal via their club website and social media.

A statement read: “Wigan Warriors are delighted to announce that winger Liam Marshall has signed a new four-year contract with the club.

“The deal will mean Marshall will remain with the Club until the end of the 2028 season, in what will be his 12th professional season at Wigan.”

It’s yet another long-term contract for one of the stars at Wigan Warriors with the likes of Bevan French, Jai Field, Harry Smith, Jake Wardle and the coaching staff all on lengthy deals.

Marshall now becomes the latest and looks set to continue his try-scoring exploits for another four seasons as he pushes to become one of the Cherry and Whites’ most prolific ever try-scorers.

Speaking on his deal, Marshall said: “I’m honoured to be able to extend my time at my boyhood club. Since signing at 17 I have never imagined myself playing anywhere else. I’m very lucky to be part of this great team and great town, and me and my family are all proud Wiganers and look forward to what the future has to offer.

“Personally, this year has been one of very mixed emotions for our family, but the way the club behaved and looked after us all will never be forgotten by me and my family, making this an easy decision for us to stay.”

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet added: “Liam is integral to what we want to build as a team and as a Club. He has the skillset of an outstanding winger and we love him for his attitude, determination and commitment that rubs off on everyone around him.

“I think our fans will be as happy as we are to see Liam extend his time with the Club, including a Testimonial that he will thoroughly deserve.”

Marshall will next be in action with Wigan Warriors on Tuesday as the club play their postponed fixture against Leigh Leopards from Round Two when they contested the World Club Challenge against Penrith Panthers.
