Wigan Warriors ‘not the finished product’ as Sam Walters explains late call-up

Wigan Warriors' Sam Walters

Sam Walters insists there is still plenty more to come from Wigan Warriors as they look to complete a historic quadruple. Walters scored two tries for the Warriors on Saturday night as they beat Leigh Leopards 38-0 in the Super League play-off semi-finals to progress to next week’s Grand Final.

It was a dominant performance throughout as Wigan managed to assert themselves and turn on the style at times at the Brick Community Stadium, with Liam Marshall getting a brace, while Jai Field and Bevan French also touched down. Leigh hardly threatened at all over the 80 minutes with Wigan succeeding in keeping them scoreless.

However, Walters believes the Cherry and Whites have even more to offer and they’ll be looking to put in a ‘full performance’ at Old Trafford against the Robins.

“Leigh had a real dig, it was a hostile crowd coming here but they put in a good performance,” he told Sky Sports after the game. “I thought we just ran away with it in areas but we’re not the finished product yet and we’re still building towards that full performance.

“We’re desperate to defend, we put a big emphasis on our defence and we just keep showing up for each other, sometimes the system gets broke but we keep showing up.”

It’s fair to say Walters probably wouldn’t have been involved on Saturday had Wigan Warriors been at full strength in the back-row. However, Liam Farrell pulling out of the game through illness gave the former Leeds Rhinos man the chance to step into the fold and he certainly didn’t disappoint.

“I got a late call last night but nothing changes,” he added. “We’ve got such a talented squad that it doesn’t really matter when a player comes in. Obviously being outside Bevan it makes my job a lot easier.”

Asked if he felt he had done enough to get the Grand Final nod, he added: “I don’t know, it’s up to the boss but I’m ready to go if that’s the case.”
