Wigan Warriors’ Matt Peet lifts lid on disciplinary chat with star man and issues Hull FC verdict

Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet admits he has spoken to Adam Keighran about his discipline following his sin-binning against Leigh Leopards.

Keighran was shown a yellow card in the closing stages of regular time on Thursday night for catching Lachlan Lam with a swinging arm. That meant that Wigan entered golden point extra time with just 12 men on the field before succumbing a 1-0 defeat thanks to Gareth O’Brien’s drop goal.

The centre has been handed a Grade C charge and five penalty points by the RFL’s disciplinary panel for head contact, but with the threshold for a ban standing at six points, he will be available to take on Hull FC on Friday night.

Peet wasn’t entirely happy with the Australian’s actions and he’s called him to take more care when it comes to that side of his game.

“I’ve had a chat with Adam, and he needs to be careful, we want him to be more careful,” Peet said during his press conference on Tuesday. “I understand it was a reaction to a kick, his timing was off, but we need to be there.”

On the new disciplinary points system, Peet added: “I like it. Just looking at this week, the Grade Cs stay on the field, and get a fine, but also their cards are marked so if they get another one, they’re going to miss a game, which I think is pretty fair.

“If you look at Adam’s tackle, and the (Mason) Lino one, I’m not sure they deserve to miss a game for one.

“But you don’t want to see players doing that repeatedly and, with the new scoring system, they would deserve to miss a game if they did.”

After their opening day setback, Wigan will be looking to get their first points on the board this Friday night when they make the trip to East Yorkshire to face Hull FC. The Black and Whites have made plenty of changes since last season with a new head coach, new owners and a raft of new players stepping into the fold.

Morale will be up at the MKM Stadium, too, with the club getting an opening round win at Catalans Dragons last Friday night.

“There’s been an overhaul there, it’s a fresh start – not just with it being a new season but under new ownership,” Peet added. “John (Cartwright) has put his own stamp on the team, he’s recruited very well and they got a good result last week so confidence and optimism will be high.

“We’re going to face an almighty challenge this weekend.”

The Wigan Warriors head coach added: “I was particularly impressed by their competitive nature and their commitment to defend and fight. John will be extremely proud of that as a starting point, I know I would have been.”
