Wigan Warriors’ Matt Peet gives update on Liam Farrell ahead of Grand Final

Wigan Warriors' Liam Farrell

Wigan Warriors will give Liam Farrell all the time he needs in order to prove his fitness ahead of the Grand Final, says Matt Peet.

Farrell was a notable absentee on Saturday night when Wigan took on Leigh Leopards at the Brick Community Stadium, with the forward being named in the initial 21-man squad only to drop out late through illness. Fortunately for Wigan, the skipper wasn’t missed as Sam Walters stepped in and scored two tries to collect the man of the match award.

However, as the Cherry and Whites enter yet another Grand Final week, there’s still some doubt about whether Farrell will be involved at the weekend, it seems. Speaking at the Super League Grand Final press conference on Monday afternoon, Peet was unable to give a definitive answer on whether Farrell will play at Old Trafford.

“It’s not particularly an update but we’re monitoring him to see how he recovers from the virus and if he’s good to play,” Peet told the press.

“If he’s good to go, he’ll play. We’ll give him as long as he needs.”

Of course, Peet would prefer to have one of his most experienced players available this weekend when Wigan Warriors meet Hull KR in the Grand Final. Farrell already has five Super League winners’ medals at home and his nous and big game knowhow could be key for the club when they take on the Robins.

However, if the 34-year-old isn’t well enough to be involved, the head coach knows he has a more than able deputy for the back-rower, who is eager to retain his spot and built on his positive showing against the Leopards.

“I’m confident that if Sam needs to play then he’s coming off the back of a good performance which is good,” he added. “But Liam Farrell and the experience he has in these game and what he brings to the club, he’s a good player.”
