Wigan Warriors join Leigh Leopards and Warrington Wolves in showing power of Super League teams in communities

Wigan Warriors have shown that they are one of the leading clubs when it comes to community work with the Warriors working with charities and local schools in the build up to Christmas.

It was especially special for hooker Sam Powell this week who went to work at the school his children attend.

“It’s something I really enjoy doing,” Powell told Sky Sports. “I found out the day before I was coming and didn’t tell my kids, so it was a bit of a surprise for them, but just to come to a school where they are makes it a bit extra special.

“When Matty took over, he wanted to really push getting us back with the community and more connected.

“Last year, we made some big steps forward with that and this year we’re trying to improve again.”

Meanwhile Harry Smith added: “It is a bit surreal at times because you don’t feel like you’ve earned that opportunity but to be able to get the kids down to any games or anything which gets them involved in rugby league is a massive bonus, not just for Wigan but the whole game in general.

“It’s been brilliant again for us lads to be able to get out, come see the kids, and encourage them to come down to games because that’s what it’s all about.”

It comes after players from the newly-promoted Leigh Leopards paid a festive visit to Patrick House to assist with wrapping gifts donated to Compassion in Action’s annual Christmas Toy Appeal.

Joe Wardle, Ben Reynolds, Zak Hardaker and Jacob Gannon were part of the team of volunteers who wrapped hundreds of presents that have been gifted by the charity’s valued partners, local businesses and the community of Leigh.

“I would like to thank Leigh Leopards and the club’s community who, year on year, donate so generously to our Christmas Toy Appeal,” said our CEO Pam Gilligan.

“Their compassion for our town’s most vulnerable families is especially appreciated during the current cost of living crisis affecting us all. I would also like to offer our heartfelt thanks to Joe, Ben, Zak and Jacob for taking time out to volunteer at our headquarters, and also to Superleigh Manager Christine Brown, who joined them during their visit. Together, we will make a difference in Leigh this Christmas.”

It comes as Warrington Wolves do their own charity work and community work with star players handing out memberships to young children as well as offering food and presents to those struggling this winter:
