Matt Peet has moved to allay fears of an injury lay-off for Abbas Miski following his absence on Thursday night. Wigan Warriors lifted the League Leaders’ Shield at the Brick Community Stadium as they saw off a much-changed and inexperienced Salford Red Devils side with ease, winning 64-0.
They did it without Miski, as well, with the winger missing out with a knee problem. Miski has been a key man for the club this season with his displays on the right edge yielding 11 tries to make him Wigan’s third highest try scorer this year, behind Bevan French and Liam Marshall.
As such, his absence was something Peet was asked about after the game, but the head coach has confirmed that he will be involved in Wigan’s play-off semi-final in a fortnight’s time.
“He’s fine,” Peet said, per Serious About RL’s sister publication, Wigan Today.
“He has a bit of a crunchy knee at the moment. I think all year it has just been a case of managing it. He’ll be back for the semi.”
Of course, Wigan Warriors are now just 80 minutes from yet another appearance at Old Trafford with top spot ensuring they will host the lowest ranked team to progress from next week’s eliminators on home soil.
“I’m proud of the group and proud of the staff. I know we’ve got big games to come, so come Monday, we’ll start talking about them,” he added, reflecting on the achievement of winning the league.
“I think it’s important we don’t brush over it, it’s a big achievement and it’s a credit to first and foremost the players, and not just the ones that have played tonight, but the ones who have played their part all season, some of which their season has been ended by injuries, some who don’t get picked every week as young lads coming through the pathway.
“Then all the performance staff; it’s a credit to everyone at the club. From a rugby point of view, I’m proud to lead that group.”
