Wigan Warriors injury latest as Matt Peet to make late fitness check

Wigan Warriors

Matt Peet will be checking on the fitness of Liam Marshall this week before he puts his Wigan Warriors team together for this week’s Super League clash.

The Warriors face off against Leigh Leopards on Friday night and they’ll be desperate to turn in an improved performance after struggling for form in recent weeks. Wigan needed last ditch tries to overcome Huddersfield Giants and Castleford Tigers last month and lost to Wakefield Trinity after what can only be described as a subpar showing.

As such, the gap between the top two now stands at four points, with Hull KR firmly in the driving seat heading into the final months of the season. Securing the win at Leigh Sports Village on Friday night then is absolutely vital and Peet knows that Marshall’s fitness could be a big factor.

The winger left the field in the closing minutes of the clash at Wakefield through injury before pulling out of the warm up on Saturday night ahead of the clash with Castleford after rolling his ankle.

As such, the Cherry and Whites are treating the England international with caution, but Peet is hopeful that Marshall will be fit enough to be included in his side.

“Liam’s alright,” said Peet, per Wigan Today. “He’s run a bit today. We thought he’d be good for last weekend, but not. It’ll probably be a similar process this week. It’ll be quite late when we know for 100 per cent.”

‘Leigh Leopards one of Wigan Warriors’ toughest fixtures’

Peet confirmed that Jake Wardle was fine, too, despite appearing to suffer a pec injury against the Tigers. Looking ahead to the fixture with Leigh, who beat Wigan 1-0 in the opening round of the season, Peet highlighted just how challenging he expects Friday’s game to be.

“A few years ago it was a surprise seeing Leigh at the top end of the table, but that’s long gone,” Peet added. “It’s certainly one of our toughest fixtures, home or away, not just because of the rivalry, but the quality. It really will be a great evening and event with the show that Derek puts on.”
