“An ugly one” – Sam Tomkins gives verdict as Wigan Warriors’ Harry Smith sent off

Wigan Warriors

Wigan Warriors saw their 30-4 loss to Leeds Rhinos worsened when star half-back Harry Smith was sent off in the final minutes with the England international now possibly set to miss Magic Weekend.

Magic Weekend is being held at Elland Road with Wigan Warriors facing St Helens on a showpiece Saturday that also features hometown favourites Leeds Rhinos taking on Warrington Wolves and a bottom-of-the-table clash between Hull FC and London Broncos.

Wigan Warriors now look set to be without Harry Smith though following his red card with the England star sent off for making contact with the head of James Bentley late on. Smith completed his tackle and then appeared to thrust his arm into the head of the prone Irish international.

Referee Liam Moore labelled it as a “high force” contact whilst Wigan boss Matt Peet conceded that he was “disappointed” with his side’s discipline throughout the game.

Adam Keighran had been sent to the sin bin earlier on for an accumulation of high tackles and the fate of both men will be determined on Monday at the Match Review Panel, however, it is Smith who looks set to face action according to Sam Tomkins.

Working for Sky Sports, the Catalans full-back stated: “I think Harry will miss next week. It was an ugly one.”

Sam Tomkins criticises “dysfunctional” Wigan Warriors

The former Wigan Warriors star had been in action for Catalans last night in a game that saw him limp off with a hamstring injury but he was in action for Sky and didn’t hold back on his analysis of Wigan’s performance.

“They were dysfunctional at times but they were frustrated and that’s that’s why Harry comes up with this. The game is gone at this point but he’s trying to make an impact.”

“As we’ve spoken about, Bentley’s a player that gets under people’s skin, and if he can do it correctly, it’s a skill and he does, and this is frustration and Harry has gone for a shot on his head.

“I’m sure Harry will hold his hands up, but when it goes to the panel on Monday or Tuesday then I imagine he’ll be missing Magic.”

It begs the question of how Matt Peet will plug the gaps with Bevan French still likely to be missing for their clash with St Helens but Tomkins argued that there was a clear answer.

He said: “Jack Farrimond was playing for the Reserves against Leeds and he was very good. I imagine Jack will be getting a call-up because I don’t think Ryan Hampshire’s the answer given what he produced. It also looked like he was carrying a sore arm as well so they’ve got some fixing up to do.”

It’s about time someone dropped Smith on his head. Hopefully a 7 ft tall guy,it might stop Smith from fouling in future.
