Wigan Warriors explain why ban from St Helens game was overturned ahead of Hull FC

Adam Keighran of Wigan Warriors was handed a one-match Penalty Notice for a Grade B ‘Dangerous Throw/Lift’ after their derby win over St Helens.

This came just over a month after being handed a three-game ban and getting a red card for a shoulder charge on Arron Lindop. He would have been banned for the Warriors’ clash with Hull FC this weekend as a result.

Keighran has been almost ever-present for the Warriors this year, and has often been the side’s designated goal-kicker. He has six tries to his name this year and will be a key member of the Warriors’ hopes of defending their League Leaders’ Shield and Grand Final victory.

Therefore, the Warriors were keen to appeal his ban.

The decision was made by the RFL’s Operational Rules Tribunal last night,  and Wigan were successful with their appeal.

The RFL confirmed yesterday: “Adam Keighran of Wigan Warriors has successfully challenged a Grade B dangerous throw / lift charge imposed after last Friday’s Betfred Super League fixture against St Helens. The Independent Operational Rules Tribunal found him not guilty.”

Now, speaking ahead of their game against Hull FC, head coach Matt Peet has explained why they won the appeal.

He said: “We challenged the charge itself, there was a lot going on in that tackle. It was a messy tackle with extra Wigan players and Saints players getting involved. We felt it was unfair to pin it all on Adam and we made a strong case.”

He’s free to play at the weekend, where Wigan are facing the prospect of finishing the round six points clear of their nearest rivals. The Warriors travel to the MKM Stadium on Saturday, and kick off at 2pm.

It is quite simple why Keighran got off — he plays for Wigan. They get preferential treatment.

Earlier this season Smith did a spear tackle on a Cas player, and got off when the Tribunal panel stated it was the Cas players fault for putting himself into the position.
