Wigan Warriors confirm squad for first pre-season clash with new signing named

Wigan Warriors

Wigan Warriors have confirmed their squad to face Championship side Oldham in their first pre-season game this weekend.

Matt Peet had previously revealed a handful of players that would feature as he confirmed that the forward pack would be full of experience, announcing that Liam Byrne, Kruise Leeming, Tyler Dupree, Harvie Hill and Sam Walters would all play.

He had also explained that the backs selected would have played far fewer first-team minutes but teased that the players on Sunday could be the Junior Nsembas of the future.

Speaking on Oldham’s YouTube channel, Peet explained: “What you’ll find is that some of the lads at the weekend whose names you don’t know, a couple of years ago that was someone like Junior Nsemba so it’s a chance to see hopefully the next crop.”

Obviously, since then Nsemba has been crowned Young Super League Player of the Year, earning Dream Team honours and representing England as well.

Wigan Warriors name strong squad for pre-season clash

As promised, Peet has named all five forwards that he said he would and the backs certainly do have less first-team minutes but there are still some incredibly talented players involved.

Among those familiar names are young stars Zach Eckersley, Tom Forber and Jack Farrimond who all earned significant game time in 2024 with Eckersley even scoring in the Challenge Cup Final.

Others who have played first team minutes include Sam Eseh Jr, Harvey Makin and Tiaki Chan whilst the remainder typically hail from the club’s impressive academy system.

New signing George Hirst, who arrived from Oldham and is expected to return to the Roughyeds on loan this season, will make his Wigan Warriors debut.

Lukas Mason, son of former Super League star Keith Mason, is also in line to play.
