Wigan Warriors head coach has aired frustrations at his side’s discipline in their shock 24-14 loss to Castleford Tigers, a game that marked the club’s third Super League loss in a row.
It’s the first time since 2021 that Wigan have lost three in a row in Super League and it’s something that has never happened in the Matt Peet era, with the Warriors now in uncharted territory.
There are obvious mitigating factors, namely the fact that they were without both starting half-backs and had a number of other key players missing such as Sam Walters, Ethan Havard and Jake Wardle, however, Peet pointed to ill-discipline as the reason why his side lost.
Speaking post-match on Sky Sports to assess the defeat, the Wigan coach admitted: “I’m disappointed with the result and the performance.
“I thought there were periods in the first half where we looked in decent shape, but for too long we didn’t click on the ball, particularly in the second half.
“Defensively, I thought our discipline. We had periods where we were giving numerous six agains and penalties away and we never really wrestled it back, particularly at the start of the second half.”

Wigan Warriors boss slams ‘poor performance’
That start of the second-half is where Castleford won the game and arguably where Wigan lost it as the Warriors shipped three tries between the 47th and 59th minute, with Castleford keeping Peet’s side to nil in the second-half.
A total of 16 errors certainly didn’t help and when asked about that figure, Peet said: “These things roll into one another, don’t they when you give penalties away, then you get the ball back and you’re not where you need to be.
“We were not good enough when we had the ball. It’s a tough one to take. We need to be much better than that.”
Peet did offer praise to the Tigers who beat Wigan in Super League for the first time since February 2020, with the Wigan boss adding: “Credit to Castelford, they came here and did a job on us and we need to learn quickly.”
It marks the second Super League loss in three where Wigan have lost to the team at the foot of the table with winless Huddersfield having beaten them in round six, and Peet insisted that his side are well aware of how competitive Super League is and had not underestimated the Tigers.
“It’s not a reminder. We got that against Huddersfield. I don’t think we need it. We know we’re in a game every week.
“We know we have to be at our best every week and I think everyone in Super League is aware of that across the competition. It’s not a case of underestimating Castleford whatsoever. We were poor today.”
