Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has suggested a surprise contender for the side’s Player of the Season, following their win over Leeds Rhinos.
The victory kept the Warriors on course to clinch the League Leaders’ Shield again, and they recorded a comprehensive 38-0 scoreline over an on-form Rhinos side.
With just one game left of the regular season, Peet’s side sit two points ahead of nearest rivals Hull KR after a 24-20 win against the Robins at the Brick Community Stadium.
Wigan Warriors boss names surprise ‘Player of the Year’ contender
One of the tries from this weekend’s win was scored by loose-forward Kaide Ellis, in what was his first score in just over two years.
Speaking after the game, via Wigan Today, Matt Peet said: “I was chatting with the coaches behind the scenes and I said it’s funny because Kaide Ellis will get mentioned tonight by people because he’s scored – but he’s actually been in the mix for the player of the season in our opinion.
“He’s just a pleasure to coach, has a great balance in his game, a good lad, enjoys a laugh but works hard. We think a lot of him.”
This has been Ellis’ third season with the Warriors, following a move from St George Illawarra Dragons.
He’s also part of the side’s leadership team, and in the absence of Liam Farrell, he was named captain for some games last month.
Peet continued: “He’s certainly a leader. I like his manner, he has a good balance between having a laugh and enjoying himself but he’s very determined, and very meticulous in his preparation.
“He’s just got a good work ethic, he’s from a working family in a working town and came through a good system at Penrith, so he’s just an excellent trainer.
“Day-to-day, he’s very consistent and he has a lot to be proud of at the moment.”
