Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet slams Warrington Wolves following Matty Nicholson signing

Today, Warrington Wolves announced the signing of Wigan Warriors forward Matty Nicholson.

The teenager has played twice in 2022 so far for Matt Peet’s side, but has been snapped up by Daryl Powell as he continues his major recruitment drive.

The 18-year-old England Knights international is one of the country’s most exciting young forwards and can play either loose-forward or back-row. The Halifax-born forward was highly-sought after amongst Super League and NRL clubs.

Peet, however, does not understand the decision to join Powell’s side.

“I’m really disappointed – he’s a good player with massive potential and I’m left scratching my head at his decision,” Peet told Wigan Today.

“If there’s one thing we prove we do here it’s give young players a chance. He didn’t see it playing out that way, he thinks it’s a simpler path to play there at Warrington.

“When it came to talk about his contract, he did mention it (his first-team minutes), but I reminded him that he’s 18 and his goal at the start of pre-season was to make his debut, which he’s done.

“Ourselves, St Helens and Leeds stand apart in giving young players a chance and there was that chance with Matthew.”

Peet also took a dig at Warrington’s conveyor belt of youth, identifying the Wolves’ capture of developed Wigan players.

“It’s another tick at the side of our Academy for producing players.

“It would be demoralising to work in Warrington’s Academy – I keep reading about the strength of it and they’re continuously paying for our players: Ellis Longstaff, Sam Storey, Dean Beddall and now Matthew.”

Upon joining Warrington, Nicholson said: “I’m excited to be joining Warrington and it’s an opportunity I’m really excited about.

“After speaking to Daryl [Powell] and Karl [Fitzpatrick] I’m excited to be a part of the plans that are in place here for the next few years. I feel like I can play my best rugby under Daryl and kick on with my development here at Warrington.”
