Wigan Warriors boss makes Hull KR admission and provides injury update on Liam Marshall

Matt Peet conceded Wigan Warriors have their work cut out in order to catch Hull KR at this stage of the season after losing 16-10 to Wakefield Trinity on Friday night. The slip up means the Robins are now four points clear at the top of the Super League table, with 12 games remaining.

Of course, the two sides are scheduled to play each other at the Brick Community Stadium, but Wigan need KR’s form to take a turn if they are to stand a chance of retaining the League Leaders’ Shield.

The Warriors could have no complaints about the result at Belle Vue with the Cherry and Whites being second best for large periods of the contest. They went in at the break 10 points down after tries from Caius Faatili and Josh Griffin and although Adam Keighran hit back at the start of the second half, but Tom Johnstone touched down to seal the contest.

What Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet said after Wakefield defeat

“I think they’re certainly in pole position,” Matt Peet said when asked by Serious About RL about the table. “It’s four points now and the points difference, they don’t look like dropping points at the moment, they’re playing incredibly well, relentless in their approach.

“It’s going to be difficult to turn that around but we can’t worry too much about that, we have to concentrate on our week to week performances and get our heads down.”

On the loss, he added: “I thought we were second best in a really good game, in terms of the intensity and energy of the game and physicality, I thought it was a much higher level than we’ve been at for a long time. Within that I thought that Wakefield executed their game plan better than ours, whether that was better last plays, better execution of edge attack and defence, I thought they were good for it.

“Credit to them, the night belongs to them and everything that’s happening here, they’re going in a positive direction. It hurts for us but we have to give credit to Wakefield.

“I thought they were marginally better than us in key moment, they took their chances and we let them off with some pressure releases in key moments. It wasn’t that we were way off, I think we would have beat a lot of teams tonight but not Wakefield and the way they played.”

Wigan leave West Yorkshire with an injury concern after seeing Liam Marshall limp off the field late on, but Matt Peet couldn’t provide much of an update.

“Not sure yet,” he said when asked for an update. “It was his leg, I don’t know much more yet.”
