Wigan Warriors boss looking ahead to Hull KR after “strange one” against Salford Red Devils

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet on constantly improving

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has assessed his side’s 54-0 win over Salford Red Devils and discussed plans for an upcoming clash with Hull KR.

Hull KR also scored 50 points on Sunday afternoon as they hammered Huddersfield and Super League will now see a repeat of last year’s Grand Final in Round Seven when the Robins host Wigan Warriors.

Before then, KR will take on Hull FC in the Challenge Cup but Wigan have the week off after previously being defeated by the Black and Whites.

They’ll head into that week off with a win after running in nine tries against an under-strength Salford Red Devils side who are hampered by injury, a restricted salary cap, and reported refusals to play by players – something that head coach Paul Rowley commented on.

As such, it made for a “strange one” at the Brick Community Stadium admitted Matt Peet with the Wigan boss conceded that all eyes will move to Round Seven.

“I’m relatively pleased,” Peet confirmed, when speaking post-match on Sky Sports.

“It was quite a tricky game today for obvious reasons. We wanted to show that we’ve got some improvement in us from the last few weeks, but also we’re up against an under-strength and under-prepared opposition so we’ve got to be mindful of that.

“I probably won’t dwell on it for too long and move on quickly.”

That game against Hull KR is the first of a gauntlet of big games with St Helens in Rivals Round, before tests against Hull FC, Warrington Wolves and Leigh Leopards.

In response to that fixture list, Peet said: “That’s how we like it and that’s how we want Super League to be isn’t it, with competitive teams. We enjoy it and just coming out of the start of the season, we’re enjoying our work.”

He also offered words to Wigan’s defeated opponents with the Red Devils having fielded two fresh loanees and a number of academy players in a very makeshift team that didn’t give in, something Peet was asked about.

On Salford’s spirited performance, he said: “I think they can all keep their heads held high, and Paul and his staff no doubt the same.

“They’re going through a difficult time at the moment. I think everyone in the game has got sympathy for the players and the staff, the football department and the club.

“I hope to see them come out the other side of it but they can still be proud of their effort today and they troubled us.”

Salford looked to have got on the scoresheet in the final seconds but video referee Marcus Griffiths overturned Chris Kendall’s on-field call and ruled that Nathan Connell’s strip of Jai Field went forward, much to the dismay of the Red Devils’ fans and even Matt Peet.

“I think I could have copped that one to be honest,” he accepted before adding:”It was a strange one today. Like I say, you want to get a professional job done but you can have some empathy for your opposition and maybe a try at the end would have been fitting.”

With a week off now, he outlined the plans for that game against Hull KR, stating: “We’ll just do what we normally do, train, have some fun, and then rest up ready for a good week going into Hull KR, who are flying at the moment, so nothing much will change.”
