Wigan Warriors boss issues Abbas Miski injury update and forward boost confirmed

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet insists Abbas Miski is fit and ready to go when called upon.

Miski has sat out of Wigan’s last three games after picking up a rib cartilage injury with Zach Eckersley being seen in the Cherry and Whites’ wing spot. He has had a difficult campaign with injuries ensuring he has found it difficult to build up a head of steam in Super League.

The winger has made just eight appearances all year, and while he has scored seven tries, injuries have got the best of him, having struggled with a knee issue before his most recent setback.

However, Peet insists he is available for this week’s game against Castleford Tigers, just as he was for last week’s game against St Helens, with his absence being down to selection.

The Wigan head coach has also confirmed that Patrick Mago will be returning to the fold this week after missing the derby due to a failed HIA.

“Abbas was available last week, I just felt Zach deserved another opportunity,” Peet said, per the Wigan Warriors website. “He’s been playing really well and he was good again.

“We have Patrick Mago back available so we are in good shape. It’s certainly going to be tough picking the 1-17 in the final weeks, but that’s a good feeling knowing that.”

With two games to go, Wigan know there is a chance that a win over Castleford Tigers might just be enough to secure a spot in the top two. Leeds Rhinos, who currently sit two points back in third, take on Catalans Dragons on Thursday night and should a shock happen, the door would be left open for Wigan to secure that home play-off semi-final.

Even if Leeds win, though, a result over Castleford would make Wigan huge favourites to join Hull KR in the final four.

“Getting that home semi-final is certainly a big incentive for the group,” Peet added. “Having a week off means you can get more work done, which is something that’s served us well in the past.

“We have to be focused on getting our fundamentals right and making sure our energy levels are where they need to be. Hopefully we will be good enough in the next two games to get that.”
