Wigan Warriors boss hails ‘outstanding’ star man amid Super League prediction

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet

Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet described elements of Kruise Leeming’s showing against Leigh Leopards on Tuesday night as ‘outstanding’. Leeming was making just his second appearance after returning from injury but starred over 80 minutes as Wigan recorded a 28-6 win over their local rivals at the Brick Community Stadium.

The hooker had a hand in almost everything the Cherry and Whites did well against the Leopards as he unpicked their defensive lines with his sharpness around the ruck and dug deep in defence. He didn’t get over the line himself, but his two try assists either side of the break went a long way towards helping Wigan cruise to victory.

It was a win that sent the Warriors two points clear at the top of the Super League table once more and after the game, Peet could be heard piling praise on Leeming.

“I agree he was man of the match,” Peet said per Wigan’s official site. “I know he had some nice moments with the ball but I just thought his work rate in defence and his commitment to that side of the game was outstanding.”

The victory was Wigan’s second in a row as they left memories of the shaky form they displayed towards the end of July firmly behind them. It was also the club’s second outing of a period in which they will play three games in the space of 10 days, with a trip to Leeds Rhinos to come on Saturday.

“It was a tough test,” Peet added when assessing the performance on home soil. “I knew we’d have our hands full against a strong Leigh team who have been in really good form.

“I was made up with our start and then we applied pressure on our own game and managed score a few points. We played a real simple game, we had discipline in what we did, and fortunately the opportunities were there.”

On hitting the top of the table and what might be to come, he added: “I like what we’ve learnt. There will be more twists and turns so we’ve got to concentrate on ourselves and trying to improve on a daily basis. There will be plenty that we learn from tonight and that’s all that we will talk about.”
