Wigan Warriors man Kaide Ellis addresses Salford Red Devils’ controversial team selection

Wigan Warriors Kaide Ellis scores a try against Leeds.

Wigan Warriors man Kaide Ellis has discussed the short turnaround ahead of his side’s potential title-decider this week, which caused interesting squad selections for their opponents.

Much has been made of the decision to move the game forward to Thursday night, with just six days’ notice, to give the game a Sky Sports slot.

It will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event, with the game kicking off at 8pm.

A draw or a win would secure the League Leaders’ Shield for the Warriors, after winning on points difference ahead of St Helens and Catalans Dragons last season.

Salford Red Devils have made a huge number of changes to their squad for the upcoming game, frustrating Hull KR, who need the Red Devils to take a win in order to stand a chance of finishing top.

The Red Devils’ justification was: “With qualification for the playoffs secure, our head coach has opted to give key players a well-earned rest in anticipation of a tough eliminator clash.”

Speaking to club media, Kaide Ellis said on the short turnaround: “The short turnaround’s meant we’ve not been able to do as many sessions but we’ve still been able to sharpen up.

“The mood’s remained positive as everyone gets a bit excited at this time in the year. There’s no better place to be than where we are at the minute.”

Also asked about the Red Devils’ squad selection, he added: “Even though they’ve made the changes we still expect them to be Salford and to throw the ball around in attack whilst trying to put you under pressure in defence.

“Regardless of who plays our mindset will be preparing the same as if they were full strength. It won’t be too much about them, instead more about us.”

He concluded: “We’ve not always been perfect but we’ve kept our heads and managed to find wins in tough ways. That has given us strength and I feel like we’re peaking at the right time.”
