Wigan star admits he was surprised by big coach’s decision

Wigan Warriors may have been hit and miss to start the season but they started to show genie quality edging a titanic clash with Huddersfield Giants on Friday.

Speaking after the game, two try hero Bevan French spoke about what the win demonstrated:

“I think it was a win that really showed our character. It’s one of those wins where it’s probably going be like that towards the end of the year, those tough scrappy games and we’ve had ones like that in the past where we’ve let it slip away so to come away with the win there is a good confidence build for us,” French said on the Warriors website.

“Everyone is happy with the effort of course, but saying that there is still a lot of things to work on going forward.”

French’s second try came when he had moved to fullback.

French admitted that he was surprised by the decision:

“I wasn’t sure why it happened but it was good to be around there in that spot again. Jai has been doing an outstanding job and I think in making the switch we started to ship the ball around a bit more and poke our nose through the line a little bit.

“There was a bit of off-the-cuff kind of play there and a reaction. It’s that sort of eyes up Rugby and a way we want to play especially around Custy and the players we have around our spine. It was nice to get back over for a couple of tries.”
