Championship side ‘fight off a lot of clubs’ to sign Aussie speedster

Cameron Brown has signed for Widnes Vikings

Championship side Widnes Vikings have fought off ‘a lot of clubs’ to sign an Australian speedster ahead of the 2025 season.

They were the words used by Vikings head coach Allan Coleman as Widnes announced the signing of Cameron Brown from Cornwall.

The 24-year-old, who can play both full-back and half-back, starred for the League One outfit in 2023 and 2024 and such solid performances caught the eye of Widnes Vikings, along with others per Coleman’s comments.

Across his two seasons in League One with Cornwall, Brown scored 27 tries in 37 whilst also proving a sharpshooter with the boot as he knocked over 41 conversions in 2024.

He now joins a Widnes side who are making great strides on the field with Coleman taking the club to the play-offs in his first season, with the Vikings’ appearance in the top six in 2024 marking the first time they’d achieved that feat since their relegation to competition in 2018.

Just last week, Widnes signed former Warrington Wolves and Bradford Bulls man Dec Patton and a former St Helens forward with the club setting about some strong recruitment for the 2025 campaign.

Widnes Vikings swoop for League One star

The signing of Brown was announced by the club via their website with a statement reading: “Widnes Vikings are pleased to reveal our newest addition ahead of the 2025 season, as Cameron Brown arrives at the DCBL Stadium from Cornwall.”

Speaking on his move, Brown said: “I can’t wait to come in and see what I can offer to the team. They had a great year in 2024 and the way Allan spoke to me, the club is heading in the right direction. There’s a lot to be excited about in the near future.”

Whilst Widnes were one of the teams to suffer at the hands of IMG, they were one of the most-improved outfits on the pitch as they jumped from ninth to fifth, before losing to a very strong York side in the play-0ffs.

For Brown, the opportunity to play at a higher level was one he couldn’t turn down as he explained: “I’ve heard great things about Widnes and when they got in contact with me, I was stoked about the opportunity to represent the club and play at a higher level.

“I’ve always been a player to back myself and play what’s in front of me so hopefully I can bring a bit of spark to the team.”

Head coach Coleman added: “He is a really exciting player with lots of pace. He loves to attack the line and can play both in the halves and at fullback.

“I’m over the moon to get his signature, we had to fight off a lot of clubs for him so I’m delighted he chose to join us for 2025.”
