Widnes Vikings have pulled off one of the most eye-catching recruitment coups of the off-season, beating NRL heavyweights the Brisbane Broncos to secure the signature of highly-rated Australian back Byron Johnson for the 2027 season.
The 23-year-old fullback and centre joins the Vikings from Queensland Cup side South Logan Magpies on a deal that includes an option for a further 12 months in 2028.
Johnson has spent the past two years embedded within the Brisbane Broncos’ official feeder system and was originally slated to trial with the NRL club’s top-tier squad ahead of the 2027 season.
However, after discussions with the Widnes hierarchy, the explosive outside-back opted to turn down the NRL trial pathway in favour of a fresh challenge in the UK.
Speaking on his decision to swap Queensland for Cheshire, Johnson admitted that the club’s long-term ambition sealed the deal.
He said: “Whilst an opportunity to trial with an NRL team for 2027 was available, after speaking to the Widnes recruitment team I see their vision, I’m so excited to represent a club in England with such huge potential.”
He will also find a familiar face upon arrival, linking up with close friend Max Banditt at the DCBL Stadium.

Championship club Widnes Vikings beat NRL interest to land Queensland Cup star
Widnes head coach Allan Coleman was thrilled to land a player who commanded serious attention Down Under.
With the club moving on following Nathan Connell’s departure, Coleman emphasised that securing a direct, high-calibre replacement was vital.
Coleman said: “I’m really, really excited by the signing of Byron, over the moon with all the hard work behind the scenes,
“He’s got a lot of speed, he’s powerful, strong, really hungry, and he has a massive future in the game.”
Johnson is part of an active recruitment drive as the club shapes its squad for the Championship.
Alongside bolstering their outside-back and spine options, the Vikings have also secured the services of winger Dan Nixon from Rochdale Hornets.
